Moniker Chuckles

Just thought I'd share with you a couple of names that have made me giggle lately.

The spousal unit's boss is named Tom Waits. Seriously. Now, that's got to be a common name, a'la Rod Stewart or Chris Martin, but it still makes me grin whenever I hear it.

I love Dutch words and names specifically with their overabundance of vowels. I stumbled on an article in National Geographic the other day by one Stephen Van Der Aa. You have to pronounce it out loud to get the full effect. "Van Der Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah".

Share with me some names you've found amusing!

Friend of mine actually named their son John Thomas.

(I don't know what it is, I can't get away from the inappropriateness today.)

I came across an application at work once with the name of "Ashole" (seriously, come on people). Her parents must have been high...

My brother-in-law has a friend named Bart Simpson. He's over 40 so it wasn't that his parents had a cruel sense of humour. (Or if they did, at least it didn't manifest itself in their name choice.)

I wish my boss was Tom Waits.

Megan...I feel obtuse but I don't get what's inappropriate about John Thomas. I'm sure I'll feel really silly when you tell me.

Pugs, what? As a first name? Was it a joke?

Amanda - aye caramba! I bet Bart Simpson the elder hears that a lot. You wouldn't want this Tom Waits to be your boss.

I'll never forget that I was watching an episode of "Rescue 911" (yeah, long time ago) and there was a fire chief named Hugh Dick. The best part? He was Hugh Dick, Jr. So his Dad was obviously not a sympathetic man. He had to take his son down with him.

It's from Lady Chatterley's Lover. Construe.

Becks, I guess I might be tempted to pass on the pain if that were my name too. I knew a few Dicks in high school (haha) and I felt sorry for them.

Megan, OK I get it. Plenty of people use literary references to name their kids, but that's an interesting choice.

Folden B. Stumpf, an historian of physics. His name is unusual.

BTW I have a friend who named their kid John Thomas too!

I lived a while in an area heavily settled by the Dutch and overpopulated by a particularly fecund French family.

Due to some intermarriages, there were a number of local tombstones boasting the name "Chevrolet-Van Horne". There was also one reading "Tooke Van Leuok" (sp?), which pronounces "Took One Look".

However, the best one was the stone that appeared one Hallowe'en reporting that several stones had been spray-painted and tipped over in a local church bulletin.

The stone shown, with a smear of spray paint, read "Vandall".

Anon - reminds me of my old neighbors whose last name was Stimpfl. Sounds like you have a speech impediment when you say it.

Metro - I esp. like the Vandall tombstone. That belongs in a comic strip!

Here are a few more (I actually write these down when they are so ridiculous): Cucuzza Shnerpal, Singletown Vaglica (ROFL!), Papplardo Pouponaeau (Poop-on-you?), and my favorite ethnic name- Bich-Nga Niggebrugge. I have no idea how to pronoune that one but it just looks wrong...
